Working Irregular Hours Could Increase Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes

According to Medline Plus, working irregular hours could increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. When diabetes or any other medical condition leads to debilitating symptoms, you may be eligible to receive long-term disability benefits.

New research finds that women who work irregular hours—such as rotating night shifts—lead to problems beyond fatigue. They’re at risk of type 2 diabetes. The longer a woman works irregular hours, the greater the risk as well.

Nursing was a field specifically looked at. For those who worked irregular hours for 2 years, the risk of type 2 diabetes was minimal. Beyond 2 years however, the risk begins to climb. Women involved in the study who had worked these types of hours for more than 20 years had an increased risk as high as 58%.

Other studies have also found links between rotating shifts and metabolic syndrome. Symptoms that may develop include resistance to insulin and elevated blood pressure. Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of not only developing type 2 diabetes but also heart disease.

Additionally, irregular work hours are also found to lead to obesity, which is yet another risk factor for diabetes. The study didn’t however, determine why this risk exists.
