Wounded Veterans Receive Mortgage-Free Homes

August 18, 2010 - Wounded veterans face many problems once they return home. In addition to learning how to live with their new disability, veterans and their families also face financial strain as the veterans try to find work or go to school. Either way, if those veterans can be housed for free, it would remove a huge stress factor from their lives.

Dan Wallrath is a custom home builder in Houston, Texas. Wallrath has spent the last couple of years building custom homes for wounded veterans and giving them to the veterans and their families - free of any mortgage. Wallrath has built 4 custom homes since 2005, with 5 more under construction. He has named his idea Operation Finally Home and is attempting to take his idea nationwide.

Wallrath's path started when he consulted the parent of a wounded veteran on modifying his son's house to accommodate his son's wheelchair. The modifications had to be made, but the father had no way to pay for them. Wallrath collected a team of suppliers, carpenters, and plumbers who all agreed to work for free.

Wallrath did the only thing he felt he could do to help veterans in the same position, which was to build homes customized for specific veterans and then turn them over free of charge. He approached his local trade group and developed a plan to build homes for wounded veterans. His group convinced suppliers and contractors to make donations for their cause. With the donations and the group's labor, they can build a $300,000 house for anywhere between $25,000 and $50,000.

Every house Wallrath gives away is completely tailored to meet the needs of the receiving veteran. Not only are the houses provided mortgage free, Wallrath's group pays the taxes and insurance on the house for the first two years.

Wallrath's goal is to build 100 homes, and in order to do so, needs the support of builders' associations nationwide. Wallrath, while retired, spends half of his time on this endeavor and does not take any paycheck. The bottom line is these houses are saving people's lives. The sooner he builds a national network of builders, the sooner he can help more veterans and their families.
