November 23, 2010 - The Wounded Warrior Project's (WWP) headquarters are in Jacksonville, Florida. The project focuses on garnering public support for injured soldiers and veterans in order to develop and implement programs to help them. Their latest undertaking is WWP Restore.
WWP Restore is an online support tool for veterans. It is designed so that up-to-date and original information is available for those struggling with, and suffering from, mental health issues as well as trauma related to combat, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). With combat-related stress and mental trauma being so unfortunately common among young soldiers, WWP Restore seeks to serve as a beacon of light where these soldiers and veterans can go to find support and help from other warriors undergoing the same problems.
The site is "self-help," but that in no way implies visitors are alone. WWP Restore provides a private site where soldiers and veterans can research their symptoms and issues and seek help. The site contains videos of other soldiers and veterans sharing their experience and familiarity with shared issues, such as PTSD, depression, mental health issues, and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) are the first generation of veterans who will use the Internet as their main source of information on how to readjust to civilian lifestyles.
Only approximately 50% of the 300,000 veterans who would otherwise meet diagnosis criteria for PTSD and/or depression have looked for help. WWP -Restore not only provides self-diagnosis tools, it provides custom tailored steps focusing on how to handle their combat-related stress. It is hoped providing these services on this type of confidential platform will allow more soldiers and veterans to seek help where they would not in a more clinical environment.
Created in conjunction with experts from Boston and Columbia Universities, as well as the Boston VA health care system, WWP restore seeks to create a community of veterans not likely to seek help from traditional sources. If they won't come to the help, then the help must go to them. Right now, many of those needing help are online.
