Bob Dole, WWII Army veteran and former U.S. Senator, regularly meets veterans at the memorial erected in Washington DC to honor those who served in WWII.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Dole greets veterans and those accompanying them every week in the journey to see the memorial which is sponsored by Honor Flight Network, a non-profit organization. The group provides transportation to Washington DC so that aging WWII veterans can visit the monument to their service.
When they arrive, Dole welcomes veterans and their traveling companions with a speech and takes time to stand for photographs and thank them for their sacrifice for our country. When he was recently ill, his wife, former Senator Elizabeth Dole, stood in for him.
Meeting Dole is a highlight to the trip for many veterans who see him not only as a comrade but a politician who has represented them for many years. After taking the trip and meeting Senator Dole, one veteran wrote him a letter and said that Dole's speech provided much needed inspiration at a time when his "self esteem was at rock bottom."
