Young Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans Rejecting VA Health Car

A recent study has found many returning Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans are not using the services provided for them at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), according to an article in The Huffington Post.

The study, which was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, states that out off all the veterans who are eligible only about half of them have reached out to the VA for health care. The study also found numerous reasons why veterans are not seeking health care from the VA, which include the following:
  • ·        distance to the medical clinic;
  • ·        unfamiliarity with the VA system; and
  • ·        not being confident with the level of care the VA provides.
Since a large amount of Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans are apart of the younger generation, the VA hopes to use a bigger budget to improve their communications with them.

The VA has made attempts to tailor specific information toward Iraq and Afghanistan veterans by producing the Crisis Hotline, Facebook pages for every VA medical center, and PTSD phone applications, which veterans may find easier and more comfortable to utilize since these services can be used anonymously.
