With the number of U.S. veterans cycling back home and leaving the armed services, veteran organizations thought their memberships would increase, but that is not the case, according to a recent article in Radnor Patch. Organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion are great ways for veterans with disabilities and those without disabilities re-acclimate to their civilian lives.
The number of veterans joining such groups, however, is "surprisingly small." A majority of veteran's organizations' memberships consist of veterans from Vietnam, Korea, and World War II. Many returning veterans do not want immediate reminders of anything military, which is likely keeping them away from joining.
Those posts that do have veteran members from Iraq and Afghanistan have found they are not very active within the organizations. Traditionally veterans use these posts to talk about their service because nobody else understands it, but that is not holding true with younger generations.
Every war is going to produce a different veteran. Today's veterans faced a much different service than their predecessors, but even so, veterans can find a sense of hope and help from these organizations to transition back to normal life and find comfort that they are not alone.
