Younger Veterans More Likely to Forego PTSD Drugs

Prescription drugs have long been a staple in therapy for veterans with disabilities such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Traditionally, veterans with PTSD are given a "first-line pharmacotherapy," but according to an article in The Clinical Psychiatry News, veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are more likely to not finish their therapeutic process.

This behavior was found to be
more likely if those veterans were also depressed, according to a recently analysis of pharmacy records provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). There were multiple reasons why younger veterans seem to behave in this manner.

It seems many veterans are overwhelmed transitioning back into their civilian lives while trying to balance their PTSD symptoms, families, and finding employment or attending school. Spending time adjusting pill dosages or possible side effects is apparently where many of the younger veterans are drawing the line. Additionally, many of the younger veterans may not be aware of how their PTSD is affecting them and may not be comfortable attempting to navigate the VA healthcare system.

In the end, researchers believe these behaviors are creating a "more vulnerable subtype of veterans." For this reason it is very important to make sure those veterans failing into this category are given proper follow-up.
