Some
cardiovascular diseases can debilitate an individual, leaving them unable to work. If you are disabled for a lengthy period of time you may qualify to receive long-term disability benefits.
The
New York Times reports that according to
2 different studies, a person's midlife fitness level may predict an individual's future heart health. In fact, it is believed that it can be just as effective in determining someone's heart health long-term as much as some of the risk factors.
Risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and weight are often used to predict the likelihood of future heart problems. Now researchers have found that measuring someone's fitness level during midlife can do the same.
Researchers used a treadmill which shows how fast an individual can run a mile. This provides a pretty basic formula for determining future heart health risks. In other words, your fitness level in your 40s will be a pretty strong indicator of your risk for cardiovascular problems in your 80s.
Before doctors can begin to use this as a regular measuring tool for heart health however, further studies will need to be conducted.
