Q: I am receiving LTD benefits from my insurance carrier. Should I also apply for Social Security Disability benefits?
A: More often than not, your private disability policy will include a clause requiring you to apply for Social Security Disability benefits. The time requirement to apply varies per policy. In addition, most disability policies signed within the last 20 years state that if you receive Social Security Disability benefits your insurer may deduct such benefits from your private disability payment.
For example, if your private disability policy pays you $3,000 per month and your Social Security Disability benefits are $1,000 per month - your private disability payment will be reduced to $2,000. Read your policy to find out if your Social Security Disability benefits will offset your private disability benefits.
