I am the widow/parent of a veteran who was receiving or set to receive Veterans' Disability Compensation. Am I eligible for dependent benefits?

A:

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a wide range of benefits and services for the surviving spouse, dependent children and dependent parents of deceased veterans and military servicemembers.

When an eligible service member or veteran dies (after Dec. 31, 1956), from a service-connected or compensable disability, the VA owes Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) to the eligible surviving spouse, children, and parents (38 U.S.C. § 1310). For deaths occurring on or after Dec. 16, 2003, successful claimants are entitled to the entire amount of benefits that would have been paid had the death not occurred. For deaths that occurred before that date, recovery is limited to two years' worth (and not necessarily the last two years).
