In most states, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients also qualify for Medicaid. You should contact your state's medical assistance office. Generally, SSI recipients are also eligible for social services provided by their state, city or county where they live. These may include homemaker services, arrangements for meals or transportation. More information is available at your local public assistance office, which is probably located and run by your local department of human services or social services.
Be sure to inquire about applying for food stamps and free school lunches and breakfasts for your children. And, recognize that you may be eligible to receive emergency assistance if you have suddenly become homeless.
You will need to bring the following documents with you to the public assistance office:
--Proof of identity
--Proof of income (including any benefits you or anyone in your household receives)
--Social Security numbers for all members of your household
--Proof of any assets such as bank accounts, home ownership, etc.
Next, you will need to fill out the paperwork you are given. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you cannot complete it on your own.
