Summary of Proceedings Below

On April 2, 1997, the veteran underwent an examination for a miscellaneous neurological disorder. He told the examining doctor that his back began to hurt after a 25-mile hike in 1980 when he was in Basic Training (R. 1038-1039).

On April 8, 1997, the veteran underwent a General Medical exam and told the examining that when he was in basic training he developed back pain after a 25-mile hike with full gear. He said he presently had back pain which radiated to the legs and numbness in his feet. Impression was given as low back syndrome, among other diagnoses (R. 1034-1036).

On April 15, 1997 the veteran underwent a Compensation and Pension Exam and told the examining doctor that when in basic training he developed pain and numbness in the low back and legs, and said that he now has constant low back pain that radiates down the legs. He said he also had problems with pain in the plantar areas of the feet since he was in service. That doctor told the veteran that he had metatarsalgia which appeared to have begun while in service and was service-related. (R. 1030-1031).
