American Women Veterans

The American Women Veterans are a group of women dedicated to helping women deal with the misconceptions and solitude that often follow a deployment. When Genevieve Chase of Alexandria, Va., got together with a group of female veterans the goal was just to talk and feel a sense of camaraderie. The small support network has now expanded to well over 2,000 members.

The group pledges to, "Enlighten. Engage. Empower." female veterans. The group does this by planning events aimed at raising awareness of the unique challenges women face and ensuring that women veterans are able to get together and share their experiences.

The mission of the American Women Veterans is to:

  • Engage and advocate for new or improved policies that improve the lives of women veterans and our families
  • Sponsor retreats, conferences and symposiums focused on empowering our members and our communities
  • Conduct outreach campaigns to raise awareness among service women and veterans of our benefits, entitlements and services
  • Promote positive images and public awareness of women's contributions from all branches and eras of service
  • Embrace continued service to our communities and our nation through philanthropic projects
  • Cultivate leadership and professionalism within the military ranks and our communities
