Q Fever

Q fever is among nine presumptive diseases that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has added to its list of presumptive diseases. If the service member can show that they contracted Q fever while serving in Southwest Asia or Afghanistan they will qualify for VA disability compensation.

Please read on to learn more about Q fever, its symptoms and long-term effects.

  • Definition: Q fever is contracted when a person inhales dust particles contaminated by infected animals. The animals most likely to be infected by the illness include sheep, goats and cattle. Though most people who contract the illness do not remain ill, some will go on to develop chronic Q fever which can lead to pneumonia, hepatitis and years of illness that can affect the heart, liver, brain and lungs. Chronic Q fever is often fatal.
  • Symptoms- Q fever can be difficult to diagnose as people who contract the illness often present very different symptoms. While more than half of the people infected with acute Q fever have no symptoms the rest suffer from flu like symptoms such as: high fever, severe headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and severe muscle pain. The symptoms for chronic Q fever are the same as acute Q fever, but they last for over six months. Chronic Q fever can develop up to 20 years after initially contracting the illness. In addition to the flu like symptoms chronic Q fever can cause the lining of the heart to become inflamed, infect blood vessels and cause bone infections, chronic lung infections or chronic fatigue.

If you are a veteran who believes that you have contracted Q fever or if you have been diagnosed with Q fever you may soon have an easier time qualifying for VA disability benefits.
