What to Do after a BUI Accident (Part B)

According to the American Boating Association, Boating Under the Influence (BUI) is responsible for 31% of all fatal boating accidents.

Filing a Disability Claim

If you have been seriously injured in a BUI accident, you may be eligible to file for disability payments
. Disability payments are intended to assist accident victims who are unable to work due to injury.

It is important to file for disability as soon as possible - it can take up to 3 to five 5 to process a disability benefits application.

According to the Florida Department of Health, disability claims may be filed at your local Social Security office.
The claim is then sent to the Division of Disability Determinations to in order to determine your medical eligibility. The claim may be returned to the Social Security Administration for a final decision regarding eligibility.

There are many factors used to determine your disability payment eligibility.
For example, if you have not worked long enough under Social Security, you may be unable to collect disability. If you have questions, contact the Social Security Administration for more details.

Applying for a Handicapped License Plate

If your boating accident injury has caused you serious disability, you may be in need of a handicapped license plate.

To apply for a handicapped license plate, the Florida Highway Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles requires you to have current certification of your disability. This certification must be provided by a physician, chiropractor, optometrist, physician's assistant, or registered nurse.

Form HSMV 83039 must be filled out and submitted to your local county tax collector's license plate agency
. This form includes the handicapped license plate application as well as the statement of certification.

You should contact a personal injury attorney immediately to learn about your rights and determine liability.
