Discussion of the Definition, Treatments and Complications of Brain Edema (Swelling of the Brain)

Brain edema occurs when there is an increase in brain volume due to the expansion of cerebral tissue and water content. The brain and its surrounding fluids are inside the skull. Therefore the brain can only swell so much before it comes in contact with the skull. This pressure can cut off supply to a portion of the brain, causing parts of the brain tissue to die. The death of vital brain cells can lead to physical and mental impairment. In the most serious cases, brain edema may cost the injured their life.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of brain swelling. As the brain swells, a natural reaction to head trauma, there is an increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) - an event that often causes long lasting disability and impairment.

Some of the secondary brain injuries caused by brain edema include:

  • Brain death
  • Coma
  • Loss of life
  • Brain damage (ranging from moderate to severe)

If medical treatment is sought immediately following a head injury the effects of the swelling can often be minimized. It is crucial that a doctor promptly identify and treat brain edema.
