Breast Cancer and Social Security Benefits

The Social Security Administration (SSA) may provide disability benefits if you are disabled because of breast cancer. The diagnosis of breast cancer can be devastating, especially if you are facing a lengthy period of treatment and recovery. If your cancer or cancer treatment has left you unable to work, contact a disability attorney in Fort Lauderdale who can help you determine if you are eligible for Social Security disability benefits.

Breast Cancer Statistics

Breast cancer, along with non-melanoma skin cancer, is one of the most common types of cancer for women to get.
However women are not the only ones who suffer from breast cancer. Men can also get breast cancer. In fact, in 2010 there have been 1,970 new cases of breast cancer being diagnosed in men.

For Hispanic women, breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death. In other women it is the second leading cause of cancer death. The estimated number of new cases of breast cancer in the United States this year for women is 207,090.

In addition, an estimated 390 men and 39,840 women in the United States have died from breast cancer so far this year.

Types of Breast Cancer

There are two main types of breast cancer, invasive breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).
With invasive breast cancer, abnormal cells invade breast tissue. Cancer cells can then spread to the lymph nodes. With advanced breast cancer, the spreading can continue to organs and bones, which is a process known as metastasis. This is the most serious form of breast cancer.

With DCIS, abnormal cells don't spread to tissue but instead, grow within the milk ducts. Although this is a non-invasive form of breast cancer, it can still turn into invasive cancer.

No matter what type of breast cancer you may have been diagnosed with, it is always in your best interest to get a second opinion. This is especially true before starting a treatment plan.

Breast Cancer Treatment

Treatment for breast cancer can include:

  • Surgery (lumpectomy, reconstruction, mastectomy)
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Drugs
  • Hormone therapy (aromatase inhibitors, tamoxifen)
  • Targeted therapy

Sometimes the treatment for breast cancer is very lengthy and requires that you stop working. Social Security disability benefits can help cover lost wages while you are disabled.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is disabled, contact a Florida Social Security lawyer who can determine if you are eligible for Social Security disability benefits.
