Miami Social Security Disability Guide: Colon Cancer & Disability Benefits

As a Florida resident you should know about your potential right to disability benefits should you be diagnosed with a severe medical condition such as colon cancer.

A Miami Social Security disability lawyer can help you with the initial filing for disability benefits, or help you with appealing a claim that has been denied by the Social Security Administration.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer occurs in the lower part of the digestive system, affecting the large intestine.
Generally polyps begin to form and in some cases will then turn cancerous.

Since polyps are very tiny and most individuals don't experience any symptoms, regular screening can help before the risk of colon cancer becomes serious. Sometimes symptoms don't begin to manifest until the cancer has progressed.

Some of the symptoms potentially indicating colon cancer include:

  • bloody stools and/or rectal bleeding;
  • fatigue;
  • weakness;
  • diarrhea, constipation or changes in stools consistency that last 2 weeks;
  • unexplained weight loss; and
  • frequent abdominal cramps, pain or gas.

Treatment of Colon Cancer

Treatment for colon cancer can be very debilitating and make it impossible to continue working. This is where Social Security disability benefits can help.

There are generally 3 stages in treating colon cancer:

  • surgery;
  • chemotherapy; and
  • radiation.

Surgery for colon cancer will depend on the stage of your cancer. A colonoscopy or laparoscopic surgery may be all that is required to remove polyps, found in the early stages of colon cancer.

A colectomy is a type of surgery used to treat cancer that has grown into or through the colon.
Generally lymph nodes that are close by are also removed and tested for cancer.

If the colon cancer is in advanced stages, you may have to undergo palliative surgery, which helps to relieve pain and bleeding.

The goal of chemotherapy and radiation therapy is to kill cancerous cells. This type of treatment may be used even after surgery has been performed.

Some individuals may also benefit from targeted drug therapy. This can be used alone or in combination with chemotherapy.

Recovery from any of these types of treatment can be difficult and long-term. You may be unable to return to work. When a medical condition is expected to last at least a year, you may be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.

Consulting with a Miami Social Security disability lawyer should be your next step to determine if you qualify for disability benefits.
