How does Social Security determine if I am able to work a very heavy job?

Social Security looks to the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) to determine the physical exertion and skill requirements of work in the national economy.

An examiner at Disability Determination Services (DDS) determines whether or not you can live up to the physical demands of a sedentary, light, medium, heavy, or very heavy job by matching your physical limitations with one of the work definitions found in the DOT.

Definition for very heavy work:
  • lifting objects weighing more than 100 pounds at a time, and
  • frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds or more.

This will not be hard for an examiner to do if you have not made it your mission to gather the RIGHT medical evidence for your file.

Remember, the burden falls on you to prove that your disability prevents you from performing ANY job.

The Law Offices of LaVan & Neidenberg will assume the responsibility of gathering all of your medical records and evaluations and provide you with specialized medical assessment forms for your treating physicians to complete that will clearly demonstrate your physical and mental limitations.

Learn why medical assessment forms like a Residual Functional Capacity Questionnaire and Mental Capacity Assessment carry so much weight.
