Diet Tips to Help Your Teeth and Your Heart

Though it may sound strange researchers have found evidence that links poor oral health with heart disease. The good news is that there are many ways to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

One such way is to watch what you eat. However, dentists do not just want you to avoid sugary foods and drinks, instead, they have made a list of the foods that can actually help improve the health of your teeth and thereby your heart.

The following list contains the top foods and drinks that can help keep your smile fresh and your heart healthy:

  • Apples- A tart apple increases the amount of saliva in your mouth. This in turn washes away any harmful bacteria and keeps your mouth moist.
  • Soy and Eggs- Foods high in protein replenish the cells in your body. This keeps blood flowing to the nerve endings in your teeth.
  • Carrots, Celery and Bell Peppers- These crunchy vegetables stimulate and clean the gums. All three also contain vitamin C. Vitamin C rebuilds collagen, which helps make-up gum tissue.
  • Dark Chocolate- Research shows that dark chocolate contains chemicals that fight plaque buildup. However, only chocolate with at least 80 percent cacao will do the trick.
  • Water- We all know that we should drink more water. Water will not only keep your cells hydrated, it will also keep bad bacteria away. Drinking water rinses the bad bacteria away and keeps your mouth nice and moist.
  • Cheese- Cheese, milk, yogurt and spinach are all high in calcium. Calcium strengthens the jaw bone and can help prevent weak teeth.
The foods listed are not only good for your teeth, they are good for your heart as well. Bon appetite!
