Overview of Genitourinary Impairments

If you suffer from a disability related to the genitourinary system, you may qualify to receive Social Security disability benefits. The genitourinary system refers to the organ system of the reproductive organs, along with the urinary system.

The Social Security Administration may provide disability benefits if you suffer from a condition included on the Listing of Impairments under the genitourinary system.

The Listing of Impairments is used to evaluate genitourinary impairments that are a result of a chronic renal disease.

Category of Impairments - Genitourinary System

The Listing of Impairments for the genitourinary system includes:

  • Impairment of renal function; and
  • Nephrotic syndrome.

Specific criteria are used to evaluate renal dysfunction resulting from any chronic renal disease which may include:

  • Chronic glomerulonephritis;
  • Hypertensive renal vascular disease;
  • Diabetic nephropathy;
  • Chronic obstructive uropathy; and
  • Hereditary nephropathies.

It's also important to note that nephrotic syndrome, with anasarca, must be persistent for at least 3 months despite receiving prescribed therapy.

Substantial Gainful Activity

Claimants must be unable to engage in Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) in order to qualify for Social Security disability benefits
. Determining SGA is based on how much a claimant earns each month and federal regulations stipulate a specific amount on a yearly basis.

If your monthly income is greater than the federal regulations amount, then you are considered to be engaging in SGA. A claimant's monthly earnings are considered to be "net of impairment-related work expenses." So if a claimant's income is over that amount, they are ineligible to receive Social Security disability benefits.

Federal Regulation Amounts

The federal regulation amounts for 2010 are: $1,000 if you are not blind and $1,640 if you are statutorily blind
. Those who are statutorily blind receive a higher amount. Generally when the national average wages index increases, then so do the federal regulation amounts.

If you are blind, these amounts will not apply to Social Security Income (SSI); however, they will apply if you are not blind.

Trial Work Period

In addition, the Social Security Administration provides an incentive for beneficiaries to receive both their disability benefits and earnings. This can be done during a trial work period when beneficiaries make an attempt to return back to work.

If you or someone you know suffers from a disorder related to the genitourinary system, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Contact a Social Security disability attorney who can help you determine eligibility and answer any questions that you may have.
