Injuries Caused by Near-Drowning and How to Prevent Them

Injuries
Near drowning causes thousands of injuries a year. Submersion injuries range from mild and temporary to severe and profound. Some of the injuries include:

  1. Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
  2. Brain Edema
  3. Hypothermia
  4. Pneumonia

Any of these injuries can cause a child to become severely disabled. Prompt removal from the water and immediate medical care can help increase your child's chance at a full recovery. However, preventing the accident is the best way to ensure your child's safety in and around water and prevent a long-term disability.

Prevention
As the saying goes, prevention is the best medicine. Most near-drowning accidents occur in or near the home. The Orange County Government in Florida has compiled extensive resources to help parents keep their children safe in and around water. The following is a list of water safety tips designed prevent drowning and near-drowning at home.

  • At an early age, teach your children to swim.
  • Teach them to NEVER swim without an adult present.
  • Closely supervise children around any body of water- small or large.
  • Never leave small children alone who have access to a pool or spa.
  • Designate an adult "water watcher".
  • Properly secure pool covers
  • Lock or secure pool ladders for above ground pools
  • Fences around pools must be at least 4 feet high and installed according to your local ordinance.
  • Keep rescue equipment accessible at all times.
  • During a lightning storm, immediately leave the pool area.
  • Drowning is a silent killer. Do not assume you would hear your child struggling.
  • Learn how to keep your pool safe from recreational water illnesses.

Having a plan and sticking to it can be the best way to prevent water related injuries in and around your home. If you would like to learn more about water safety please visit the Red Cross at:
