Leukemia and Social Security Benefits

Leukemia, a cancer that begins in the tissue which forms blood, causes more cancer deaths in children and young adults under the age of 20 than any other type of cancer.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society report that every 10 minutes someone in the United States dies from a blood cancer. This is a serious cancer that affects hundreds of thousands of people.

The diagnosis of leukemia can be a devastating one and result in someone being unable to work or perform daily functions. If a person becomes disabled because of leukemia, they may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. If you have been diagnosed with leukemia, contact a disability attorney in Ft. Lauderdale who can help you determine if you are eligible for benefits.

Symptoms of Leukemia

The symptoms of leukemia vary. It depends on how far the cancer has progressed and where the leukemia cells have collected in a person's body. It is possible that someone with chronic leukemia may not even know they have the disease. Sometimes it is only discovered when having a routine blood test done.

Acute leukemia begins to show itself because a patient will begin to feel sick. Some of the symptoms they may experience include:

  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Confusion/Disorientation
  • Loss of muscle control
  • Seizures

In addition, leukemia can affect other parts of the body such as:

  • Lungs
  • Heart
  • Testes
  • Kidneys
  • Digestive tract

The more common symptoms of someone suffering from chronic or acute leukemia include:

  • Swollen lymph nodes, particularly in the armpit or neck (usually not accompanied with pain)
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Infections
  • Fatigue
  • Easily bruises
  • Abdominal pain (due to swollen liver or spleen)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Joint pain

The earlier these symptoms are caught and treated, the better for the patient. However going through treatment and recovery can cause a person to become disabled.

The type of treatment a patient receives depends on these factors:

  • Age of the patient
  • Type of leukemia
  • Whether or not leukemia cells are in the cerebrospinal fluid

Medical bills and time lost from work can add a financial burden to the already difficult diagnosis of leukemia. Social Security disability benefits can help during this time. Contact a South Florida Social Security lawyer who can determine if you are eligible for these benefits.
