Heart Attack: Recognizing the Warning Signs

The key to surviving a heart attack is to promptly recognize the warning signs and getting immediate medical attention.

You may be having a heart attack if you experience: 1) an uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of your chest (the feeling may spread to your shoulders, neck or arms) and 2) your discomfort lasts for two minutes or longer.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Nausea,
  • A feeling of severe indigestion
  • Shortness of breath

It's difficult for a person to admit that they might be having a heart attack - not to mention frightening. It's important to note that in 2007 over 300,000 heart attack victims died before reaching the hospital. Many of which died because they refused to take their symptoms seriously.

So what should you do if you think you might be having a heart attack?

  1. Call 911. If an ambulance isn't available or is taking too long to get to you, ask that someone drive you to the nearest hospital's emergency room as soon as possible.
  2. Evidence exists that taking aspirin very early in the course of a heart attack may help reduce its severity. If available, take two aspirin with a small amount of water.
  3. Identify in advance which route from home or work will take you to the hospital the quickest.
  4. Store emergency contact information where you can find it easily and develop a "buddy system" with someone you know, like a neighbor.
