Overview of Lung Cancer

The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits for those who are disabled as the result of a severe mental or physical disability. Contact a South Florida Social Security disability lawyer if you are unable to work and are seeking disability benefits.

Lung cancer is listed as one of the disabling conditions for which the Social Security Administration provides disability benefits. Lung cancer is a very serious form of cancer when tumors are found to be malignant.

Unfortunately, malignant tumors can grow and spread to other parts of the body, which is known as metastasis, a process that can occur very early with lung cancer. Lung cancer is a life-threatening condition and can be one of the more difficult types of cancer to treat.

The most common parts of the body that can be affected by metastasis include:

  • Brain;
  • Bones;
  • Liver; and
  • Adrenal glands.

In addition, many other areas of the body may become affected if and when lung cancer spreads.

Treatment for Lung Cancer

There are 3 types of treatment commonly used for lung cancer. One type of treatment involves surgically removing the tumor. This is typically done when the cancer has not spread past the lung. This treatment is used in about 10-35% of lung cancer cases.

Radiation therapy is another common type of treatment that kills dividing cancer cells.
This is sometimes an alternative treatment if a patient does not wish to undergo surgery or is not healthy enough to face surgery. It is also the most common type of treatment used when cancer has spread to other areas in the body, such as the trachea or lymph nodes.

Overall, the most common form of treatment for lung cancer is chemotherapy.
Drugs are administered that help to stop the growth of cancer cells. Typically, chemotherapy is recommended if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Chemotherapy can leave a patient weak, ill and unable to continue working.

In addition, some lung cancer patients may choose to try experimental therapies, also known as immunotherapies.
Clinical trials will sometimes test new drugs or drug combinations to determine if they are effective.

The diagnosis of lung cancer can be devastating and result in someone becoming permanently disabled. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with lung cancer or any severe mental or physical disabling condition, contact a South Florida Social Security disability attorney. They can help determine if you are eligible for Social Security disability benefits.
