The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is dedicated to educating Americans about mental illness and improving the lives of those suffering from a mental illness. They work to protect the rights of disabled people across the nation and have a vested interest in the mental health of disabled veterans.

From posttraumatic stress disorder to traumatic brain injuries the NAMI veterans' resource center is full of information for veterans suffering from a mental illness and their families. Please use the links below to navigate your way through the NAMI veteran's resource center.

  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)- This page gives information on the anxiety disorder. It covers former names of the disorder such as "shell shock" and "battle fatigue". A PTSD fact sheet is available here.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)- Traumatic brain injury is a serious and often life altering condition. TBI occurs when an impact to the head causes damage to the brain. To find out more about veterans with TBI please click here to visit the American Veterans with Brain Injuries website.
  • Suicide Prevention- Suicide is an ever increasing problem among veterans. Many factors and mental health issues have negatively affected today's veterans. To learn more about preventing suicide and to visit the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline please click here.
  • Veterans and Mental Illnesses- Facts and figures on the amounts and types of mental illnesses facing veterans can be found here. For example, did you know that more than 100,000 combat veterans have sought help for mental illness since 2001?
  • Public Policy and Current News- To learn more about changes to public policy regarding veterans with mental health issues please use this site. Information on the Veterans Spending Bill and Veterans Health Care Legislation are also available here.
  • VA and VISN Services- The United Sates Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) work to provide health care for American veterans. Use this link to learn more about their services and locations.
  • For Families, Children and Spouses- This page contains a comprehensive list of services and resources for the families of veterans with mental illnesses. Some of the featured programs and non-profits include: TAPS, AMVETS and Zero to Three.
