The National Institute of Mental Health, NIMH, is dedicated to bringing help and advice to those suffering from mental illness and disease. NIMH envisions a world, "in which mental illnesses are prevented and cured." Their mission is to, "transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery and cure."

In addition NIMH offers a comprehensive resource center for those suffering from mental illness and their families. Their focus goes beyond the civilian world and offers insight and information on mental illness that often plague our nation's veterans.

  • Mental health topics- Here you can find information on research, treatments and current news about disorders such as anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, PTSD and suicide prevention.
  • NIMH publications-Publications here are free and come in two forms. While some of the flyers basic and easy to read other booklets offer detailed information on mental disorders and current research. Spanish translations are available for some of the publications.
  • Science news- News is listed by year. Beginning in 2002 current news is listed here. The news includes press releases on information such as long term depression treatments and PTSD treatment efforts for veterans.
  • Clinical trials- NIMH sponsors clinical trials across the United States. You may be eligible to participate in a study near you. This page links you to current studies in areas such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Statistics- Curious about the rate of PTSD among veterans or the impact of mental illness on society?
