Overview of the Digestive System

If you suffer from a disability related to the digestive system, you may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. The Social Security Administration (SSA) may provide disability benefits if you suffer from one of the conditions included on the SSA's Listing of Impairments for the digestive system.

In addition to the categories of impairment, if a disorder leads to further complications or is also accompanied by another disorder in the body's system, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

Category of Impairments - Digestive System

The Listing of Impairments for the digestive system is as follows:

  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhaging from any cause, requiring blood transfusion;
  • Chronic liver disease;
  • Inflammatory bowel disease;
  • Short bowel syndrome;
  • Weight loss as a result of any digestive disorder; and
  • Liver transplantation.

If you suffer from any of these disorders related to the digestive system, then you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Each of the SSA's Listing of Impairments includes specific criteria that must be met in order to be eligible to receive disability benefits.

Social Security Disability Benefits and Substantial Gainful Activity

In order to qualify for Social Security disability benefits, a claimant must also be unable to engage in Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). This is based on how much you earn every month.

If your monthly income is more than the Federal regulations amount, then you are considered to be engaging in SGA. Your monthly earnings are considered your "net of impairment-related work expenses." So if your income is more than that amount, you are not eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits.

The current monthly limits for 2010 are as follows:

  • $1,000 if you are not blind; and
  • $1,640 if you are statutorily blind.

Federal regulations give a higher amount to those who are statutorily blind. These amounts will generally increase when the national average wage index increases. These amounts will only apply to Social Security Income (SSI) if you are not blind.

The Social Security Administration provides an incentive for beneficiaries to receive both their disability benefits and earnings. Claimants can make an attempt to return back to work, known as a trial work period.

If you suffer from a disorder related to the digestive system, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits.
