Exploring the Causes of Boating Accidents and Injuries (Part A)

There were fewer deaths associated with boating accidents in 2007 than in 2006, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Unfortunately, the same isn't true when it comes to injuries and other damages resulting from boating accidents. In fact, the number of boating accidents and injuries rose by several hundred over that time. The total damage associated with boating accidents also increased by nearly $10,000,000 from 2006 to 2007.

Why the Rise in Boating Injuries and Deaths?

There are a number of factors contributing to the increase in the number of injuries resulting from boating accidents. The same is true for other personal watercraft, including Jet Ski equipment.

The U.S. Coast Guard maintains that the majority of personal watercraft and boating accidents take place due to

• Excessive speeding
  
• Boating under the influence
  
• Behavior of the passengers
  
  

In short, failure to implement proper boating safety procedures and operator error can lead to serious injury and even death.

Alchol and Boating: A Dangerous Combination

Everyone knows that alchol consumption results in impaired judgment while also affecting balance, vision and coordination. What many fail to realize, however, is that the effects of alcohol worsen when it is consumed while boating.

This is because boating introduces new factors that affect the body and its senses, including:

• Vibration from the boat
  
• Engine noise
  
• Heat from the sun
  
• Blowing wind
  
• Spray from the water
  
  

These added factors cause the boater to become fatigued more quickly, which expedites the effects of alcohol on the body. Since many recreational boaters don't boat frequently enough to be highly confident in their abilities on the water, it is easy to see how alcohol and boating can be such a dangerous combination.
