DUI Injury Victim Resources (Part A)

When you are the victim of a drunk driving accident, your whole world can change. Of course, how much your world changes will be directly related to your injuries. However, no matter how mild the incident was, you will still suffer some effects having been involved in a DUI crash.

Depending on the extent of your injuries, you may need major medical care. You may even become disabled because of the accident. All of this can take a toll on your mental health and you may need counseling. Much of this can seem overwhelming but the important thing to note is that help is available.

A Florida law statute authorizes "a direct-support organization to assist victims of adult and juvenile crime." And it also "designates a Victims Compensation Trust Fund to assist victims of violent personal crimes to pay for stipulated expenses they incur as a result of the crime."So one of the first organizations you can contact is the Crime Victim Services of Florida to see what assistance they can provide you. The toll-free number is 1-800-226-6667.

Physical Therapy for DUI Victims

After the accident, you should look into whether or not you may need physical therapy for the injuries you sustained in the DUI accident. There are different methods of physical therapy depending upon the type of injury.

WebMD.com offers an excellent article on physical therapy and provides the main types of therapy. Methods include for physical therapy include:
  • Exercise
  • Manual Therapy
  • Education
  • Specialized Treatments
  • Cold and Ice
  • Heat
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Ultrasound
  • Electrical Stimulation

Exercise is using specific movements to strengthen and improve your body function.

Manual Therapy includes massage, mobilization (using slow measure movements), and manipulation (this uses rapid and forceful movements).

Education includes the following (according to WebMD):
  • "Performing your daily tasks safely.
  • Protecting your joints and avoiding re-injury.
  • Using assistive devices such as crutches or wheelchairs.
  • Doing home exercises designed to help with your injury or condition.
  • Making your home safe for you if you have strength, balance, or vision problems."

Medical care such as physical therapy can be expensive. However, you should not have to pay for those bills if the injuries you sustained were the result of a negligent driver! Protect your rights by consulting with a personal injury attorney that specializes in DUI accident cases right away. It is important that the lawyer has handled these types of cases and that the attorney understands Florida DUI laws.
