Florida disability lawyers can help when you have been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that has left you unable to work. You could be eligible to receive benefits through a Social Security disability claim.
Removal of Endocrine Disorders from SSA List of Impairments
Endocrine disorders can lead to serious complications that affect an individual's ability to function and work; however, effective June 7, 2011, Social Security Administration (SSA) removed these disorders from their list of impairments, making patients ineligible to receive Social Security disability benefits automatically.
Some of the types of endocrine disorders that are affected by this include diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders and hypoglycemia.
SSA made this determination based on the advanced treatment options available to patients with a variety of endocrine disorders and the lack of severity in many of these cases.
However, if you are already receiving Social Security disability benefits for an endocrine disorder, then you will continue to be evaluated under SSA's old criteria. New claims will be evaluated under their new criteria.
This doesn't mean that an individual who suffers from an endocrine disorder will be eliminated from the potential to receive benefits. Some of the symptoms and complications of these disorders could fall under another listing of impairments.
As an example, diabetes mellitus can lead to blindness. Vision loss could then be evaluated under the listing of "Special Senses and Speech." This condition can also cause peripheral neuropathy, a loss of function in the hands or legs. Neuropathy may be evaluated under the listing for neurological disorders. Claimants should not assume they will no longer qualify to receive disability benefits.
How Florida Disability Lawyers Can Help
While endocrine disorders may have been removed from SSA's list of impairments, it is still important that you speak with a lawyer who can determine if you are eligible for another disability or qualification.
While the process of filing a Social Security disability claim can be lengthy and complicated, especially for those who have been diagnosed with endocrine disorders, it shouldn't stop you from seeking disability benefits.
Florida disability lawyers can help in not only determining your eligibility, but also assisting you throughout the entire process -- from the initial filing of your application to the time your claim for benefits is approved or denied. If your Social Security disability claim is denied, they can then help you appeal your claim until a final decision has been made.
