Migraine is a neurological disorder characterized by altered bodily experiences, painful headaches, and nausea. Though migraines are a common condition, it affects women more frequently than men.
Most migraines are one-sided and pulsating and can last 4 to 72 hours. People who suffer from migraine headaches may also experience nausea and vomiting, and a heightened sensitivity to bright lights and noise. Some migraine suffers get a preceding aura, in which they may sense an odd light or unpleasant smell.
The exact cause of migraine remains unknown. However, the most widespread theory is that it is a disorder of the serotonergic control system. Migraines are usually treated with simple painkillers for headache and anti-emetics for nausea. It is also recommended that the patient avoid any triggers if present. Certain anti-migraine drugs can be used to treat migraine. If the patient's condition is severe and chronic, preventative drugs may be considered.
