How does Social Security Determine if am able to do heavy work?

In making a disability determination, Social Security examines the physical and mental limitations of the claimant against the physical exertion requirements of work in the national economy.

The disability examiner will use the evidence of record to determine your ability to substantially perform basic work activities such as, lifting or carrying articles, standing, walking, and pushing with their arms or legs.

This is why the staff at LaVan & Neidenberg work diligently to gather strong medical evidence for our clients.

We will provide you with specialized medical assessment forms for your treating physicians to complete that will clearly demonstrate your physical and mental limitations. Learn why medical assessment forms carry so much weight.

If you can do heavy work, Social Security will determine that you can also do medium, light, and sedentary work.

Heavy work involves:

  • lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time, and
  • frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
