The Social Security Administration provides a Listing of Impairments that may allow for someone suffering from a severe physical or mental disability to receive Social Security disability benefits.
These impairments must be severe enough that a person is unable to participate in any profitable activity, which can include but is not limited to, working. The Listing of Impairments are usually considered those that are either permanent, will eventually lead to death, or are expected to last for a specific amount of time.
Otherwise, there must be evidence that the impairment has either lasted or will last for a continuous period of more than 1 year. The Listing of Impairments contains specific criteria that will help evaluate whether someone is eligible to apply for Social Security disability benefits.
There are two parts to the Listing of Impairments. Part A includes the medical criteria that is used to evaluate disability in adults who are 18 years or older. Part B includes the medical criteria that are used to evaluate disability in those who are younger than 18 years old.
Criteria for Listing of Impairments
If your impairment is among the criteria listed, there is a good chance that you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. However, meeting the criteria listed is not the only step in determining eligibility for Social Security disability.
If you do not meet the criteria listed, you may still be considered disabled if your condition is as severe as those listed and if you meet the income and work credit eligibility requirements. Since the eligibility requirements for Social Security disability benefits includes a 5-Step Evaluation process, you should consider speaking with a Social Security disability lawyer who can go over the specifics of your case and let you know what programs you may qualify for.
