The mission of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors or TAPS is to provide, "ongoing emotional help, hope and healing to all who are grieving the death of a loved one in military service to America, regardless of relationship to the deceased, geography or circumstance of the death. TAPS meets its mission by providing peer-based support, crisis care, casualty casework assistance and grief and trauma resources."
TAPS offers a variety of programs, trainings and camps to help survivors deal with their loss. Below you will find a basic outline of the TAPS grief support services.
- Peer Support- TAPS uses peer support as the primary means of offering help to survivors. Other people who are going through or have been through similar situations are able to offer a sympathetic ear. Those in the TAPS Peer Support Network have been through a training program and have dealt with their loss for over a year. - Survivor Seminars- The TAPS survivor outreach program attempts to reach as many survivors as possible nationwide. The seminars can provide you with, "a wealth of information, resources and personal contact with fellow survivors in a spirit of friendship and understanding." - Good Grief Camps- Both regional and national Good Grief Camps are available for children and teens that have lost a loved one. The focus of Good Grief Camps is to learn more about grief, share feelings and express emotions; all while healing young hearts. They also want children to meet others their own age and not feel alone in their struggles. Hopefully children who attend the camp will come away with a network of care and friends to lean on as they move forward.
- Online Community- Chat sessions, message boards and newsletters all work together to provide a network of online support. TAPS would like for survivors to cut through the isolation of grief by sharing their feelings and thoughts. The online community can offer 24-hour support to those that need it most. - Crisis Intervention- A phone line is available 24 hours a day to help you cope with your loss. TAPS understands that grief can strike and overwhelm you at any time. If you need someone to talk to, no matter what time or for what reason please call 1.800.959.8277.
