The Council for Disability Awareness

The Council for Disability Awareness works to prepare you for a disability before it occurs. Though most of us have an "it can't happen to me" attitude a disabling accident happens every second. This means that each minute in America 60 people are seriously injured in an accident.

The Council for Disability Awareness wants to know if you are prepared for a debilitating accident. The following links will help you learn more about what you can do to prepare yourself and your family a disability.

  • Common causes of disability- If you believe that most disabilities come from an accident you will be surprised by this page. Some the more common causes of disability include cancer, heart attack and diabetes. These three illnesses cause the majority of long-term disabilities. Chronic back pain, other injuries and arthritis are near the top of the list as well.
  • Disability Statistics- Almost 7 million workers receive Social Security Disability benefits. This number increases all the time as new accidents and illness cause injury every day. The disability statistics page is an excellent resource as you begin to think about the seriousness of a disability.
  • Disability Awareness Quiz- The quiz offered here is designed to get you thinking about disability and how it can affect you. The Council for Disability Awareness wants to ensure that you understand the seriousness of disability and that you plan a disability before it occurs.
  • Personal Disability Quotient (PDQ)- This tool will help you calculate your odds of an injury or illness that could permanently or temporarily disable you. Your PDQ may point to risk factors that you can control, therefore enabling you to stave off a debilitating injury or illness.
  • Preparing for Disability- All of the information on this site leads to one question: Are you financially prepared for a disability? Since most debilitating injuries and illnesses do not occur at work your finances could be seriously compromised if you were injured. The Council for Disability Awareness gives you the tools to look at your finances and decide how you can better prepare for the worst.
