Preventing Gum Disease and Tooth Decay

Although we all know we should brush and floss more than once a day we often let this part of our routine go. Even if we do brush it may be for a short period of time and most people skip the flossing. However, poor dental hygiene can lead to poor oral heath, a major risk factor for cardiovascular (heart) disease, some cancers and stroke.

The tips below can help you keep the bad bacteria in your mouth at bay and may just help save your heart.

  • Brush teeth at least twice a day. Bacteria in your mouth multiply every 12 hours so keeping them swept and rinsed away can help protect your teeth and gums.
  • Don't stop with the teeth. The tongue, inner cheek and roof of the mouth harbor bacteria. Be sure to brush them along with your teeth and gums.
  • Brush longer. Try brushing for the length of a song or set an egg timer and brush the entire time. A quick once over doesn't effectively brush away harmful bacteria.
  • Vitamin C is a friend to your mouth. This essential vitamin helps kill the type of bacteria that causes gingivitis, a precursor to gum disease.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay.
  • Floss or use a flossing stick before you brush. Flossing or using a dental pick will remove plaque from between your teeth and near your gums. A toothbrush simply can't get into these tight spaces.
  • Stay hydrated. A dry mouth is a breeding ground for bad bacteria. Keeping your mouth moist will help flush away bacteria and keep in healthy as well.
  • Visit your friend the dentist at least once a year. Your dentist can ensure that your self-help methods are keeping tooth decay and gum disease at bay.

Remember: It's not just your mouth that will thank you for maintaining good oral health, your heart will benefit too.
