When Richard Hunsucker USMC decided that he wanted to raise money and awareness for disabled veterans he took a leap of faith; or rather a step. Starting at the Duvall County War Memorial in Jacksonville, Florida, Hunsucker began a walk across America. The walk will take the former Marine through eight states, ending at the Balboa Park War Memorial in San Diego, California. The projected date of arrival is Memorial Day, May 10 2010.
The mission statement of VetWalking.org is to, "walk across America raising donations and bringing awareness to disabled American veterans." Along the way Hunsucker has been stopping at veterans' medical centers and outpatient clinics, getting to know the disabled veterans, their doctors, nurses and family members. Along the way Hunsucker has garnered support from veterans and civilians alike. He often relies on the kindness of strangers to get him back to his car after walking the 17 miles he travels each day.
