Brucellosis

The US Department of Veterans Affairs has added nine new diseases that are eligible for VA disability benefits. In this article we will be looking at one of the nine, Brucellosis. Please read on to learn more about the disease, risk factors for contracting Brucellosis and its long term effects.

  • What is Brucellosis?- According to the Center for Disease Control Brucellosis is, "an infectious disease caused by the bacteria of the genus Brucella." Animals are most likely to be infected by the disease and most humans contract Brucellosis from dealing with the animal or its byproducts.
  • Common transmission locations- Cases of Brucellosis in the United States number under 200 yearly. However, worldwide the disease is more common and is likely to be found in countries that do not have good standardized and effective domestic animal health programs. High risk areas include South and Central America, Asia and the Middle East (Iraq Afghanistan).
  • Transmission- The most common way that Brucellosis is transmitted is by eating or drinking contaminated milk products. The disease can be transmitted when unpasteurized milk from an infected sheep, cow, goat or camel is consumed. Tainted milk products can include unpasteurized cheese, yogurt and ice cream. Brucellosis can also be contracted through breathing in the bacteria or having an open wound exposed to the bodily fluids of an infected animal. Human to human transmission is very rare.
  • Symptoms/effects- Symptoms of Brucellosis mimic the flu and include fever, sweats, headaches, back pains and weakness. Severe cases of Brucellosis can cause infections of the central nervous system, an infection of the lining of the heart, and chronic or reoccurring fevers, joint pain and fatigue.
