Malaria

Malaria, an infectious disease spread through mosquito bites, has been reported in many service men and women. In response to the number of veterans who have contracted the disease in Southwest Asia or Afghanistan the VA has added malaria to its list of presumptive diseases eligible for veterans' disability benefits.

Please read on to learn more about the disease and its serious long term effects.

  • Malaria- Malaria, though eradicated in many countries with temperate climates, is still a serious threat in places such as Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Malaria is caused by the transmission of a parasite through the bite of a mosquito. Though there is a vaccine to guard against the disease side-effects continue to be a concern.
  • Symptoms and long-term effects- The symptoms of malaria are generally recurrent and include: shaking chills, high fever, profuse sweating, malaise, headache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Complications that can cause long-term problems include: anemia, cerebral malaria, pulmonary edema, dehydration, liver failure, kidney failure and an enlarged spleen.
  • Risk factors- Members of the U.S. military who travel to areas with frequent malaria outbreaks are at high risk of contracting the disease. Even if you are a veteran who has traveled or lived in the area, your immunity may decrease in the time you have been away. In addition, young children, infants, pregnant women and their unborn children are at risk.
  • Treatments- Treatment of malaria consists primarily of various medications. The type of drug used is determined by how soon the illness was caught, where the patient is, regionally, age and level of illness.

Under the new VA guidelines if you are a veteran who has malaria you may be eligible for veterans' disability compensation. Please contact your Miami veterans' disability attorney at LaVan & Neidenberg for your free consultation.
