Preventing Head Injuries in Children

How can I prevent head trauma?

Aside from keeping your child in a padded room, there is no way to prevent the occasional accident. However, there are some ways that you can help prevent head trauma. For example, wearing a bike helmet reduces the risk of concussion by 85%.

To keep your child as safe as possible, ensure that:

  • Your home is childproofed
  • Your child ALWAYS wears appropriate headgear and safety equipment when biking, in-line skating, skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, or playing contact sports.
  • Children always use a seat belt or child safety seat
  • Your child does not go back to rough play or sports until the injury has healed. Your doctor will help you determine when these activities are safe.

Even if you follow all the steps above, your child will get their fair share of bumps and bruises. Most are easily remedied with a kiss, some ice, or a fancy band-aid. However, some injuries, such as head trauma are not to be taken lightly.

There are two main types of head trauma:
  1. External injuries (affecting the scalp)
  2. Internal injuries (affecting the brain, skull, or blood vessels)

Each comes with inherent risks, but internal injuries are often the most serious and long lasting. Any damage to the brain or the blood vessels that supply the brain with oxygen can seriously and permanently affect your child.

What signs should I look for if my child has hit his/her head?

External injuries:

As long as the child is awake and alert, check first for signs of external bleeding. The scalp is full of blood vessels so a cut here can produce copious amounts of blood. If you concerned at all about the cut, seek medical attention immediately.

Internal injuries:

If your child is an infant or lost consciousness at all, call your doctor and seek medical help right away. You should also call the doctor if your child has any of the symptoms listed below. These symptoms may be observed immediately following the accident or they may occur hours later:

-Vomiting

-Paleness

-Irritability or drowsiness

-Inability to move or feel parts of the body

-Inability to recognize people or surroundings

-Inability to maintain balance

-Problems speaking or seeing

-Drainage from the nose or ear

-Headache or neck pain

-Won't stop crying

-Abnormal breathing

-Pupils of unequal size

-Loss of bladder or bowel control

Please seek medical attention immediately if you observe any of the above symptoms in your child. Prompt and thorough care is often the key to a full recovery.
