Achievers of America Helps Disabled Florida Athletes Gain Self-Esteem

Posted on Jan 28, 2009

In 1998 Steve Biondo created Achievers of America.  The program is designed to get mentally and physically disabled people involved in sports activities.  The sports Biondo organizes are softball and bowling.

Even though the organization is made up primarily of those with disabilities, Biondo believes that participating in the program can help anyone who needs a hand.

"Think of people who are overweight," Biondo said. "It's just to get them out and socialize and do something.  That's the main goal here."

With that goal in mind, Biondo, along with volunteers and parents, meet once a week to support the special people in their lives.  The fans are there simply to help when an athlete needs them.  The athletes pick their own captains, form their own teams and participate as fully as they are able to.  Volunteers stand back and only step in when they are needed to physically help a player participate.

"What makes me feel good is seeing the parents seeing something that they never thought they would see in their child," Biondo said. "I don't treat them as someone special.  I treat them like any other human and I teach them the self esteem they wouldn't get anywhere else in the world."

For Biondo and his son, Raymond, their entry into the sports world began in New York, where Biondo created the organization.  In 2001 the family moved to Florida and brought Achievers of America with them.

The bay area is fortunate to have such an organization and Biondo, also a coach for Special Olympics, is always looking for more athletes.  They welcome anyone who is struggling, mentally or physically.

Everyone plays," Biondo said. "Everyone bats, runs and gets a high five.  Everyone."
