The FONAR Upright Multi-Position MRI is a new development that may be able to indicate the cause of MS and detect the flow of cerebrospinal fluid going in and out of a patient's brain.
Researchers using the upright MRI believe they've found the cause of MS to be biochemical, caused by earlier trauma to the patient's neck. This could be the result of a car accident, abuse, or any other type of trauma.
What these injuries can do is cause the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to be blocked. This leads to collection of the CSF in the brain's ventricles, resulting in a buildup. The pressure of this buildup can then result in CSF leakage, directly into the tissue of the brain.
It's believed that those with MS have brain lesions related to this leakage. The FONAR upright MRI was able to see the blockage of CSF more prominently when patients were in an upright position.
