For many of the 350 disabled veterans who attended a clinic that promotes rehabilitation through adaptive winter sports the snowy outing was their first.
Army Specialist Luke Murphy was riding in a Humvee when it tripped an IED. The accident caused Murphy to lose his right leg and damaged the muscle in the left leg. While recovering from his injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center Murphy watched a video of the winter sports clinic and decided to attend.
"I even came without my wheelchair, the first time I went anywhere without it. I realized that if I can do this in the Rocky Mountains, I can go back to Florida and do anything. It gave me a little ego back."
For John Register, the head of the United States Olympic Committee's Paralympic military program, giving veterans a chance to gain back some of their "ego" is just part of his job.
"There's a lot of opportunities for veterans, and we're trying to showcase that," said Register. "These vets are healing together, having a good time together. This is powerful."
Sean Halsted, a disabled veteran and Paralympian who was injured during a training exercise with the Army, is proof of the power of adaptive sports to change lives.
Halstead is now a celebrity in the world of adaptive sports. The veteran was featured in a McDonald's commercial and at the recent event his star power eclipsed that of Olympian Brody Miller.
"Felt like a V.I.P.," said Halsted, laughing. "But what keeps me level is coming home. I still have to empty the garbage and unload the dishwasher."
