In a report from Health Day, researchers may have discovered a DNA sequence that is linked to a severe form of lupus. If you were diagnosed with lupus and are no longer able to work, Social Security disability benefits may be available.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s healthy tissues to be attacked by its own immune system. When in its most severe form it can lead to hair loss, anemia, fever, and joint pain.
The DNA sequence identified, HS1.2, could be the reason that antibodies attack the body’s tissues, causing the disease to progress. This may indicate a potential form of treatment, such as a drug that works by stopping its attack. The hope would be to develop a drug that doesn’t have some of the side effects commonly seen in immunosuppressant drugs.
Researchers also indicate that this discovery could help identify patients who are at risk for the disease aggressively advancing. The study also indicates that the DNA sequence, HS1.2, may play a role in other types of autoimmune diseases.
