Enable America, a non-profit organization that helps disabled veterans find employment, has designated November as Disabled Veterans Employment Mentoring Month. Their goal is to help vets by providing workplace experience that could lead to jobs.
In San Antonio, TX veterans were paired with workers from the SAMMC-North construction project. The pairings were made based on interests that ranged from 3-D modeling to working with heavy machinery.
One such paring was a retired petty officer first class Keith Ferguson and mentor Carlitos Bostic. Bostic encouraged Ferguson, who has a 60 percent disability rating for conditions such as chronic back pain, to pursue his interest in the construction field.
Patricia Cullum, a senior project manager at JSR Inc. has hired veterans in the past and was glad to be part of the mentoring event. Cullum interviewed Ferguson and had good things to say about him.
"I was very impressed with him and the way he carried himself," Cullum said after the interview.
The day of mentoring and the interview went well for Ferguson. At the end of the day he was asked back for a second interview with Cullum.
