On a sunny day in Florida local mayors were falling from the sky. Fortunately each was paired with a member of the U.S. Army's Golden Knights as they parachuted to the ground. Their goal was to raise awareness and support of disabled veterans and the U.S. military.
Though strong winds canceled some of the jumps mayors from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Orange and Lake Counties were able to board a military plane and, in tandem, complete the jump.
The idea was brought to the Florida League of Mayors by Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick. Slesnick, himself a Vietnam veteran, had received an invitation to jump with the Golden Knights. The mayor decided to ask his fellow mayors if they wanted to join him, raising awareness of the hard work and dedication of the U.S. military and its veterans.
A total of 12 mayors were slated to make the jump. All pledged their support of the military and cited ways they are helping support the armed forces in their communities. After the jump every mayor signed a symbolic document pledging support for the military.
A member of the Golden Knights, Joe Abeln, believes that the mayors will bring their knowledge and respect of the military back to their cities.
"The mayors are leaders," said Abeln. "By showing the mayors what the army is about, they show the community."
The veterans' disability attorneys at LaVan & Neidenberg hope that the jumps do in fact bring more attention to our nation's veterans and the military as a whole.
