Florida has the second largest veteran population in the nation. A new initiative would provide a simple way to keep these veterans aware of changes and updates to their VA benefits. The initiative is being proposed to reduce the number of veterans not claiming their benefits. Currently Florida veterans lose more than $1 billion a year in unclaimed veterans' pension benefits.
The proposed change would help the VA collect accurate contact information on veterans living in Florida. A VA report on 2009 veterans' benefits determined that the Florida VA has accurate information on only 700,000 of Florida's 1.7 million veterans.
To combat this problem Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink has proposed that veterans who renew or apply for a Florida driver's license or ID be asked to check a box indicating that they have served in the military. By checking this box the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will be able to create a more accurate and comprehensive database of veterans' names and addresses. This database will be made available to the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs who will use it to send out updates and changes in benefits.
The veterans' disability attorneys at LaVan & Neidenberg hope that this initiative helps our Florida veterans receive proper VA benefits.
