Former Marine Continues His Walk for Disabled Veterans

Posted on Feb 27, 2010

Richard "Rich" Hunsucker began his trek across the U.S. on November 11th in Jacksonville, Florida.  The former Marine has been walking nearly every day since then.  His goal is to gain much needed attention and money for disabled veterans.

At the time of this report Hunsucker was 20 miles from Midland, Texas, nearly halfway across the nation.  Hunsucker plans on reaching San Diego on Memorial Day, May 31st.  So far he is on track to meet this goal.

Each day he leaves the car he has spent the night in and walks an average of 17 miles.  Hunsucker relies on the kindness of strangers to get him back to his car.  So far his journey has raised a substantial amount of money and priceless attention to the issues that disabled veterans face.  Hunsucker often stops at VA hospitals to show his support and draw attention to the various mental and physical traumas that veterans endure.

"It's been an awesome experience. People appreciate what we're doing and want to join in," said Hunsucker.  Thus far the "Vet Walking" has accepted pledges for over $400,000.  The money will be given to the non-profit Disabled American Veterans in Cold Spring, Ky.
