  • Knee Replacement Numbers Growing in Older Americans
    Jan 04, 2012

    Researchers at the Boston University of Medicine are sharing the results of a study that shows that knee replacements and reports of chronic knee pain in older Americans (over the age of 65) are becoming increasingly more common.

    The study shows that since the 1980s the number of those undergoing knee surgeries has multiplied by about 10 times. Some possible explanations for the increase include a baby boomer population and a growing number of people with obesity which puts increased pressure on the knee joints.

    Researchers also saw increased numbers of those suffering from arthritis and osteoporosis which can cause knee discomfort. While this may require, or at least need consideration of, a knee replacement, those who experience pain but do not have signs of arthritis and osteoporosis should reconsider getting a knee replacement.

    Arthritis and knee joint pain can be extremely painful and cause patients to become extremely limited in the activities they can participate in. Many victims can become confined to walkers or wheelchairs as a result of knee issues.

    If you are disabled because of chronic knee pain and can no longer work, you may be able to receive assistance from the Social Security Administration. A Social Security disability lawyer can walk you through the process of applying for benefits.

  • Many Florida Charter Schools Lack Support for Disabled Students
    Dec 16, 2011

    Charter Schools offer many different courses of study for children suffering from disabling conditions such as autism, Down Syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy to prepare for college or other vocations. By law, charter schools are accessible to any student wishing to enroll. However, a StateImpact Florida/Miami Herald investigation explains that many, in fact, most, Florida charter schools don’t admit or serve students with severe disabilities.

    Enrollment data from the state shows that 86 percent of the charter schools in Florida don’t have even 1 child with a severe disability enrolled. The nation’s 24th-largest school district, Pinellas County, reports no charter school in their district that serves a single severely disabled child

    This trend is also growing in states like California, Louisiana, and Texas. Parents of these children claim that charter schools are avoiding enrolling these students in their schools because of a perceived higher cost to care for them.

    Students suffering from severe disabilities are then forced to attend public schools which aren’t always a good fit.  Because many public schools are dealing with overcrowding and budget issues, special education programs can fall to the wayside leaving disabled students without the special attention they need to persevere.

    The Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools says it’s working to fix this discrepancy and is even developing schools that solely focus on students with disabilities.

  • 1 in 5 Female Soldiers Dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
    Dec 16, 2011

    Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can affect many soldiers in the US Army who have served in combat situations. In fact, The Department of Veterans Affairs reports that at least 1 in 5 female veterans are suffering from symptoms of PTSD while male veterans suffer with post-war PTSD at a rate of about 20%.

    However, the percentage of women serving in the military has doubled within the last 30 years and more than 350,000 women are currently serving this country. Since women are exposed to combat more now than ever the rates of PTSD are growing quickly in this demographic, making it difficult for them to readjust back home with their families.

    Symptoms of PTSD include:

    • trouble sleeping;
    • overwhelming paranoia;
    • depression; and
    • anxiety.

    There is no cure for PTSD, it can only be treated by a mental healthcare professional. The Veterans Health Administration offers many programs to help soldiers, no matter what gender, get help for any symptoms of PTSD they may be experiencing.

    If you are a veteran struggling with PTSD or any another mental condition you may be able to file a veterans disability claim to get help. An attorney can help walk you through the process of receiving the rightful benefits you are entitled.

  • New Regulations Should Make Traveling Easier for Disabled
    Dec 10, 2010

    December 10, 2010 - New regulations set to go into effect will help disabled travelers gain more accessibility on cruise ships that dock at U.S. ports.

    TheStar.com
    reports that new requirements established by the U.S. Department of Transportation will regulate the way special accommodation cabins are booked. While all major cruise lines are required to provide accessible cabins - ones equipped to handle a wheelchair and feature hand rails - there are currently no regulations on who can book them.

    Previously, when a room is booked upon a cruise ship there is no evaluation to determine if they need the additional space and accommodations an accessible cabin offers. Because accessible rooms are more spacious they are often booked by non-disabled passengers who prize the extra room.

    The new regulations will begin on Jan. 3, 2012, and require a passenger to self-certify that they are disabled and require the accessible room. Upon arrival, a cruise ship has the right to evaluate the need and determine if the passenger does indeed need the extra accommodation. If it is clear they do not have a disability, they may be kicked off the ship.

    Only if all of the regular cabins in a price category are already booked may a non-disabled passenger book an accessible cabin. Likewise, if the accessible cabins in a price category are booked and a disabled passenger requests an accessible room, they must be offered the next available cabin in a higher category at no additional charge.

    Similar changes are coming to hotels that also suffer the same problem with booking accessible rooms. On March 15 new regulations as part of an amendment to the Americans with Disabilities Act will require hotels to remove a requested accessible room from their inventory when requested. Currently, hotel reservations for specific room types are requests and not guaranteed, but this will guarantee an accessible room is available for a disabled traveler.

  • African American Women Face Higher Risk of Aggressive Breast Cancer
    Aug 27, 2010

    Breast cancer, particularly aggressive forms of the disease, can leave a sufferer disabled and unable to work. When this happens, Social Security disability benefits may be necessary to help the sufferer to address their monthly financial needs.

    A new study by the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center has found that African American women face a higher risk of developing aggressive forms of breast cancer.

    The study divided women into three groups based on ethnicity: Caucasian, African, and African American. It was discovered that a very high percentage of the African American women with breast cancer had what is known as the "triple negative" variant of breast cancer, an aggressive form of breast cancer.

    While 82% of African American women participating in the study were found to suffer from aggressive breast cancer, only 16% of the Caucasian women in the study were faced with the same prognosis.

    One of the most recent advances in the treatment of breast cancer has been to target three specific receptors. Unfortunately, women who have triple negative breast cancer are not helped by this treatment. This increases the chance of early development and the potential for more breast cancer deaths.

    On the other hand, the general risk of developing breast cancer is lower for African American women. With these findings doctors will be able to expand their studies of breast cancer risks for African American women.

    The American Cancer Society reports that this year 200,000 people in the United States will receive a diagnosis of breast cancer. An estimated 41,000 will die from breast cancer.

    If you have been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer you should contact a Social Security disability lawyer who can determine if you are eligible for Social Security disability benefits.

  • Efforts by Federal Government to Improve Care for Cancer Patients
    May 25, 2010

    Cancer is the leading cause of death in the United States. It is also one of the leading causes for a person to seek disability benefits. The Federal Government will now invest $145 million into nanotechnology with the hopes of improving care for cancer patients.

    The government hopes to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer. This disease can be debilitating and lead to individuals being unable to work for a long period of time, resulting in financial difficulties. Many cancer patients seek disability benefits through long-term disability or Social Security disability.

    This new program called the National Cancer Institute Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer was first launched in 2004. Despite the advances that have been made in cancer care, it is still the leading cause of death not only in the United States but around the world.

    Some of the areas they will target include:

    • Clinical trials;
    • Earlier diagnosis of the disease;
    • Treatments that are highly targeted to kill the cancerous cells but leave the healthy cells alone;
    • Less side effects; and
    • Improved chances of survival.

    The diagnosis of cancer can devastate a family. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer or any other severe physical condition, you may qualify for disability benefits. Contact a disability attorney who can help you determine eligibility.

  • Diabetic Eye-Related Problems Can Be Detected By Computers
    May 19, 2010

    If you suffer from a disability that falls under the Social Security Administration's listing of impairments and you are unable to work, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. A Social Security disability lawyer can help determine eligibility.

    One of the listings under SSA is special senses and speech, which encompasses a number of categories, including blindness. Diabetics are at an increased risk of developing blindness. Unfortunately, almost half of those diagnosed with diabetes do not get annual eye exams.

    Diabetic eye-related problems can now be detected by computers. These are cost-effective computerized systems that will be able to detect eye problems early on. Studies on these systems have proven to be very accurate in detecting issues with the eye.

    A trained technician uses a digital camera to capture the retina, which is located inside the person's eye. These images are transferred to computers which are able to immediately detect any signs of damage. From there, the patient can be treated.

    Diabetes can lead to a number of debilitating conditions. Early detection can give a diabetic a more productive life. If you or someone you love suffers from a severe mental or physical condition, such as diabetes or problems with vision, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. A disability lawyer can help you determine if you are eligible and how to file a claim.

    If you or someone you love has been denied disability benefits, contact the Law Offices of LaVan & Neidenberg. Our disability attorneys have experience with cross examining medical and vocational experts and take time when speaking with you about your case. • Scientists Hope to Cure Deafness
    May 19, 2010

    The Social Security Administration may provide disability benefits if you suffer from deafness or a form of hearing loss, and your disability makes it impossible for you to work. A qualified and knowledgeable Social Security disability lawyer can help you determine eligibility.

    ScienceDaily
    reports that there may be good news on the horizon for those who suffer from hearing loss. Scientists hope to cure deafness by creating the first inner-ear cells. These hair cells-placed deep inside the ears-could detect vibrations in the air which would then translate into sound.

    This idea was first conceived about 10 years ago and it seems after years of lab work, researchers may have found a way to artificially develop mouse cells that act just like the inner-ear hair cells of the animal.

    With further work, they may be on their way to finding a cure for deafness and applying this technology to use for humans. Of course, this could take another decade or more of work and research, but it provides hope for those who deal with hearing loss.

    Between age and noise pollution, human hair cells become damaged over time. It is estimated that 1 in 3 adults who are 65 years or older have developed hearing loss which can lead to disability.

    If you or someone you know has a severe disability, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. A
    disability attorney can help you determine eligibility and assist you with filing for disability benefits.
